In honor of International Women’s Day we present Turkish-French director Ergüven’s feature debut, a heartfelt coming-of-age story set in a beautiful, remote Turkish village. Five orphaned sisters full of life and energy pursue their passions—whether boys or soccer—the way any child might want to, but as they near adulthood, their behavior catches the attention of disapproving conservative community members. From a premise based on Ergüven’s own life grows an exploration of how individuality and society must negotiate and how individuals might thrive despite oppression. In Turkish with English subtitles. Running time 97 min.
“A sneaky shocker of a debut feature—sneaky because it’s so good at depicting the sisters’ joyousness before, and even after, darkness descends.” – Joe Morgenstern, Wall Street Journal
