Winner of the National Book Award, distinguished American poet Lucille Clifton has written eleven books of poetry and over twenty books for children. Clifton sings in musically clear poems and shows an ethnic pride that can integrate both race and gender consciousness. The poems are personal, but the distant thunder of history and the tenuous relationships between mothers and daughters rumble behind every line. Her honors include an Emmy Award from the American Academy of Television Arts and Sciences, a Lannan Literary Award, two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, a grant from The American Academy of Poets, the Coretta Scott King Award, and the Shelley Memorial Award. She has served as Poet Laureate for the State of Maryland and Chancellor of The Academy of American Poets.
